GeneralMontenegro is a stunning new walking destination on the Adriatic Coast to the south of Croatia with easy access via nearby Dubrovnik Airport. This recently independent country is about the size of Northern Ireland and has a population of less than 700,000 people, yet it boasts a beautiful azure coastline with rugged cliffs and sandy beaches which sweep up to the dramatic mountainscape of the interior. There are 150 mountainpPeaks over 2,000m (6561 ft). The highest is Bobotov Kuk (2525m in Durmitor. The Tara Canyon is 1,300m deep, the deepest in Europe and the second deepest in the world. Lake Skada is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula and borders Albania. It is approx 44 km long and 14 km wide. Most of the population is concentrated along the coast where historicaly there is a strong Venetian influence, best seen in the walled town of Kotor which is a World Heritage Site. Although the country is small the scenery and the walking are stunning and walking routes are often easy to follow as they are aswell waymarked as walks in countries such as Switzerland which have a much longer history of encouraging hikers . There is also a remarkable range of wildlife in such a small country, including brown bears, wolves, wild boar and golden jackal as well as golden eagles and rare Dalmatian Pelicans to mention just a few. Walking in the National ParksSeveral National Parks have been created in Montenegro and these have some of the best walking for the overseas visitor. Lovcen National ParkThe Lovcen Massif is a beautiful area. The National Park has endless paths for all abilities. Wamarked routes take you through beech woods and along rocky ridges with fantastic views to the Adriatic in the west and the mountains in the east. A short ascent leads to the mausoleum of King Petra of Montenegro where there is also a visitors Cemtre and restaurant. There is also a lovely descent along an ancient mule trail from the Park to the old town of Kotor Durmitor National ParkThe largest in Montenegro it was designated a national park in 1978 and since 1980 has been on the UNESCO World heritage list. It embraces within the Durmitor Massif nearly 50 peaks that reach to over 2000 meters. Ringed by lakes fed by melting snow from the peaks it is home to many varieties of plant and bird life and high on the peaks you find wild mammals such as brown bear, grey wolf and chamois. On the lower slopes there are woods of pine and alpine meadows. It is without doubt the most unspoilt area in Europe and due to its relative inaccessibility it has an air of complete peace. LocationMontenegro borders Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Bosnia, it is opposite the heel of the Italy with a fabulous Adriatic coastline. Montenegro gained it’s independence in 2006 from Serbia. Airports & FlightsTivat is the main airport and schedule flights are available from Gatwick during the summer months on Montenegro Airlines. Dubrovnik Airport (Croatia) is within easy transfer distance and flights to the city are often cheaper than those to Tivat Transfer TimesDubrovnik Airport to Tivat - 1hr 30 mins Tivat Airport to Tivat Town - 15 mins CurrencyMontenegro uses the Euro. There are cash machines and credit cards are accepted in some places but most of the time you require cash. Population662,000 most of which are clustered in the main and in the capital city, leaving the mountains free from crowds. Towns & HistoryPodgorica is the capital a modern town near Lake Skada, Centinje is the old Royal capital. The towns of Budva and Kotor are ancient fortified towns with beautiful architecture and cobbled streets. There are several Museums especially in Kotor & Centinje which are worth a visit.
