Las Alpujarras is an area that has been largely unexplored by outsiders until recently. It is slightly better known now as the setting for Chris Stewart's book "Driving Over Lemons". We are offering this walk in the Alpujarras, a small section of the GR7 (E4) waymarked route which ambitiously connects Gibraltar and Greece, because it provides some of the best self-guided walking in Spain.
Staying in small traditional hotels and pensions, the route begins in the mountain village of Yegen and winds from village to village through a landscape of rugged mountains, oak and chestnut forests and terraced farms that are still tilled by mules. It is a land of wild flowers, mountain ibex, golden orioles and bee-eaters.
It is possible to arrange extra nights in Granada at the end of your holiday if you wish to see more of this fascinating city. The cost is £65 per person per night in a hotel on on a bed and breakfast basis. Similarly, extra nights can be booked in small hotels (bed and breakfast) at other locations along the route for £40 per person per night.
Grade: Although the routes are relatively short in distance, the walking is moderately demanding as the temperature can be hot.
If you are arriving at Granada Airport, please contact staff at the Discovery Travel Office who will be able to advise on transfer arrangements and costs.
Day 2 Free day in Yegen.
We provide you with two circular walks of 3 and 5 miles in length. Yegen was the adopted home of Gerald Brennan whose travel book "South From Granada" was a classic of the inter-war years. ~ 8 miles
Day 3 Yegen to Berchules.
Leaving Yegen, the walk to Berchules is amazingly varied as you pass through verdant valleys, traditional villages, moonscapes and oases. ~ 9 miles
Day 4 Berchules to Trevelez.
Trevelez is the highest village in Spain and is famed for its agricultural traditions and its air-cured ham. ~ 9 or 15 miles. We provide different routes depending on the season. A higher 9 mile route, for the hotter months, passes up through chestnut trees and village terraces, then open hillside with wide open views before descending slowly through oak forest in the totally different valley of the Rio Trevelez. In the cooler months of early spring and autumn a lower route (with 9 or 15 mile options) takes you through a collection of villages in the valley of the Rio Guadalfeo before ascending to cross the water shed into valley of the Rio trevelez.~ 9 or 15 miles
Day 5 Trevelez to Busquistar.
The walk today follows the GR7 south from Trevelez passing continually changing tree species. A wide variety of orchids grow in this area. Busquistar has a spectacular position overlooking the deep gorge of the Rio Trevelez and is set amongst some of the best preserved and well used terraces of the Alpujarras. - 9 miles
Day 6 Busquistar to Capileira.
Your route today passes through the verdant Taha before taking you through oak woods to the beauty spot of Barranco del Poqueira, with views of the Taha and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. Capileira and the nearby villages of Bubion and Pampaneira have a wide selection of restaurants, craft shops and museums. ~ 7 miles.
