Starting in the medieval town of Spoleto this Italian walking tour takes you to the woods of the Valnerina and the rugged peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park, with a great deal more inbetween.

Day 1 Arrive Spoleto
Day 2 Spoleto to Scheggino ~ 5 hrs 30m
Day 3 Scheggino circular walk ~ 3 hrs
Day 4 Gavelli to Poggiodomo ~ 5 hrs
Day 5 Poggiodomo circular walk ~ 3 hrs
Day 6 Visso to Norcia ~ 6 hrs 30m
Day 7 Castellucio to Norcia ~ 5 hrs 30m

In this unspoilt part of Umbria there is a timeless atmosphere. Small churches, hermitages and chapels mark the ancient pilgrim routes. Summers are long and it can be hot in mid-summer but the mountain air is clean and fresh. Local food and wine specialities abound to add to the ambience of this holiday. The route includes the medieval town of Norcia and, in contrast, the Piano Grande, a high and remote mountain plateau surrounded by the highest peaks of the Sibillini Mountains.

Fly to Perugia, Rome or even Ancona and take the train to Spoleto.
Day 2 Spoleto to Scheggino.
Your first day's walking in Umbria takes you away from Spoleto into the green and tranquil hills of the Valnerina. You cross the spectacular bridge, Ponte delle Torri, to reach the old oak forests of Monte Luco. You gradually climb up to the ridge of Castelmonte from where an old path descends to the picturesque village of Scheggino. ~ 5 hrs 30m
Day 3 Scheggino circular walk.
Following the valley of the River Nera a three hour walk brings you to the oldest abbey in Umbria, San Pietro in Valle. You can return to Scheggino by local bus. ~ 3 hrs
Day 4 Gavelli to Poggiodomo.
You are transferred to the small village of Gavelli where you start your panoramic walk over the ridge to the highest point of the Monte Coscerno at 1684 metres. A 360 degree view opens around you, dominated by the peaks of the Sibillini Mountains and the peaks of the Gran Sasso. You then descend to your overnight accommodation in Poggiodomo. ~ 5 hrs
Day 5 Poggiodomo circular walk.
A pleasant three hour walk takes you on a high route to the neighbouring village of Usigni. From there your return route descends into the green and shady valley and passes an ancient watermill. ~ 3 hrs
Day 6 Visso to Norcia.
You are transferred from the Valnerina into the Monti Sibillini National Park, and the village of Visso. You are then truly walking in the Appenines asumbria.jpg you gradually ascend to a small mountain pass on your way to the Preci Valley. Passing the ancient villages of Campi Vecchio and Capo del Colle you reach the city walls of Norcia. ~ 6 hrs 30m
Day 7 Castellucio to Norcia.
The last walk takes you to the Piano Grande, one of the largest high plateaus of Europe. Completely surrounded by the high peaks of the Sibillini Mountains, such as Monte Vettori rising to 2476 metres, these fertile fields have been used for centuries to grow vegetables and for sheep grazing. You are transferred to Castelluccio from where you climb up to the Monte Pattino before beginning your long descent back to Norcia. ~ 5 hrs 30m
Day 8 Departure.
