The Tyrol region of Austria has long been popular with walkers and it is very easy to see why. It is a region of spectacular mountains interspersed with wide valleys and pretty villages. Some of the mountains are grassy with wooded slopes whereas others are almost pure rock above the tree line. The valleys with their meadows and villages almost shout to be photographed with their mountain backdrop. This circular walking route takes you right to the heart of the Tyrol, visiting the well-known villages of St Johann in Tirol and Kitzbuhel as well as lesser-known villages such as Scheffau.

Grade: Moderate or Easy. The walking is graded as moderate if you take the higher route options or easy if you take the lower route options and make use of all the cable cars.

Day 1 Arrive Kufstein.

Day 2 Kufstein to Scheffau.
A long ride on a chair-lift takes you high above the Inn valley and then the walking begins with a lovely panoramic path among the mountains before descending to a pretty lake and then to Scheffau. ~ 6h

Day 3 Scheffau to St Johann.
Today is the longest day's walking if you take the higher route option and takes you up initially and then it's up and down as the path contours along the slopes of the Wilder Kaiser mountains. The views are rewarding looking towards the peaks of Kitzbuheler Horn and Hohe Salve, both of which you are scheduled to have close encounters with. If you take the lower route option you follow field paths, tracks and lanes in the valley. ~ 7h30m or 5h

Day 4 St Johann to Kitzbuhel.
Timings for this section depend on how much you walk and how many cable cars you take. Suffice to say it is a glorious day out and if you get good weather you will probably want to spend all day on the Kitzbuheler Horn. At 1996 metres it is the highest point of the holiday and a superb viewpoint.

Day 5 Kitzbuhel to Brixen.
A short easy day in the valley means there is plenty of time to linger in Kitzbuhel and by the pretty Schwarzsee before following valley paths via Kirchberg to Brixen. ~ 3h

Day 6 Brixen to Soll.
Again timings depend on whether a cable car is taken or you choose to walk all the way. The route takes you over the peak of Hohe Salve, which affords spectacular views of the rocky peaks of the Wilder Kaiser, before descending to the pretty village of Soll. ~ 4h/6h

Day 7 Soll to Kufstein.
This is a pleasant final day's walking through the meadows and woods, passing the Moorsee and giving views of places you have visited during the week. ~ 4h

Day 8 Departure.
