This Italian walking holiday is set amongst the spectacular scenery of the Dolomites. Starting in Brixen (Bressanone) the route takes you high above the Eisack Valley surrounded by the rocky peaks that characterise the Dolomites. Included is a night in the old town of Bozen (Bolzano) where amongst many other things you can go and see Otzi, the well-preserved ice age mummy found in a glacier a few years ago. The walk then takes you to the most famous wine growing region of South Tirol, Kalterer See. The final night is spent in the lovely town of Meran.
Grade: Easy
Fly to Verona or Brescia or even Venice or Treviso and then by train to Brixen (Bressanone).
Day 2 Brixen to Klausen.
Setting out from Brixen you climb up to the Pfeffersberg. Panoramic paths through farms and small villages give views of the towering peaks of the Dolomites. You pass through Feldthurns and then reach the Saben Monastery on your way to Klausen. ~ 5 hrs
Day 3 Barbian to Bozen.
After a short transfer by bus to Barbian, you reach the Ritten plateau above the Eisack Valley, giving impressive views of the Dolomites and the Schlern. You pass the village of Klobenstein then to finish the day you descend to Bozen on the old Ritten Railway, a relic of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There is a lot to see in the old town with its arcades and porches. ~ 5 hrs
Day 4 Bozen to Kalterer See.
The sunny south of South Tyrol awaits you today. You will discover the area around South Tyrol's most famous lake, Kalterer See, a renowned wine growing region. But here it is not only the vineyards that impress but also the numerous castles, manor houses, churches and farms. You can visit the wine growing museum in Kaltern. ~ 5 hrs
Day 5 Kalterer See Circular Walk.
Today you further explore the lake of Kalterer See, the most renowned wine growing region of South Tyrol. In Kurtatsch, home of the Gewurztraminer, you can follow a wine nature trail. The area around the lake and the nearby lake of Montiggler See is rich in not only vineyards but also castles. The Sigmundskron Castle is the home to Reinhold Messner's mountain museum. ~ 4 hrs
Day 6 Lana to Meran.
You are transfered from Kalterer See to Lana. Shortly after leaving Lana you join the Marlinger Waals, an ancient irrigation channel that was used to bring water to the drier parts of the region. The route continues below Tyrol Castle along the Tappeiner Weg towards your final night in the lovely town of Meran. ~ 5 hrs
Day 7 Departure.
