With only 40,000 inhabitants scattered over 3000 square kilometres, the Sierra de Aracena is an ideal destination for walkers and nature lovers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The character of the villages has changed little over the centuries, their history reflected in the architecture and landscape surrounding them. You pass along Roman cobbled tracks, glimpsing abandoned watermills and ancient hill forts left by the Moors. On your walks you can still see mules ploughing small allotments, hear the ringing of goat bells among the oak and chestnut trees, and the bubbling of the many streams and springs which abound in these hills.

Grade: Easy to Moderate, depending on which walks you choose to do.

Accommodation:

Your accommodation for the week is one of two spacious detached houses built and furnished in traditional style, but with all modern conveniences. They are located in a quiet wooded valley about 15 minutes walk from the typical Andalucian white village of Alajar. There is under floor central heating and an open fire making each house very cosy in winter.

In both houses there is a sitting-room with a tv, cd/dvd player. Music and DVD's can be borrowed from the common room, where there is a good collection to choose from.

House One : consists of a living room with a kitchen area which is well equipped with modern appliances, cutlery and crockery. The double bedroom has a spiral staircase leading to a mezanine with two beds. The bathroom has a full size bath. In winter the house is warmed by a cosy fireplace and underfloor heating.

House Two : The sitting/dining room with a fireplace is on the ground floor where there is also an open kitchen and a bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin. The kitchen is fully equipped with a five-ring gas hob, electric oven, fridge, microwave and stainless steel cookware, cutlery and crockery. It also has an open staircase from the living room which goes up to the two gallery bedrooms. These have two single beds each and overlook the living room. There is a partition between the rooms for privacy. A connecting door in the living room leads through to the main bedroom which also has a separate door onto the terrace. A double bed and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin complete the accommodation. This room also has underfloor heating. The terrace at the front of the house gives wide views over the gardens and surroundings.
