Apart from the obvious attractions in Salzburg and Vienna, this cycle route is a joy to follow. After leaving Salzburg you ride through the Austrian Lakes, a region of beautiful blue lakes surrounded by high mountains. Then it is on to the Danube valley with its quaint towns and villages, its castles and abbeys and, of course, its vineyards. The River Danube is then followed by way of a traffic-free cycle route as far as Tulln, from where a train transports you to Vienna.

Day 2 Salzburg to Unterach.
An old railway track is utilised today as you make your way east into the Salzkammergut. The first lake you reach is the Mondsee, which you cycle alongside before continuing to Unterach on the shores of the Attersee. ~ 42 miles
Day 3 Unterach to Ebensee.
Beautiful mountain scenery accompanies you today in this "Austrian Lake District". More lakeside cycling is followed by the romantic Weissenbachtal leading to Ebensee at the southern end of the Traunsee. Transfer by ferry or train from Ebensee to your accommodation in Gmunden. ~ 34 miles
Day 4 Gmunden to Lambach.
Today you cycle a fairly short distance by way of Laakirchen and Steyrermuhl to Lambach. From Lambach you continue by train to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, situated on the River Danube. ~ 18 miles
Day 5 Linz to Grein.
Your route now makes use of the Danube Cycle Trail and the route is therefore flat. The valley beyond Linz is quite wide as it leads you to Enns, the oldest town in Austria. On the way a short detour can be made to visit the impressive monastery at St Florian. Beyond Wallsee the valley narrows and you and the river enter the Strudengau region, where hills keep the valley narrow. You soon reach your destination, the baroque village of Grein. ~ 37 miles
Day 6 Grein to Spitz.
You continue along the Danube Cycle Path through the regions of Strudengau and Nibelungengau, a landscape of granite hills and sleepy villages. A highlight today is the town of Melk, with its much photographed baroque Benedictine Abbey. Beyond here you enter the Wachau region, famous for its wines and littered with castles. ~ 41 miles
Day 7 Spitz to Tulln.
You continue through the hilly Wachau region alongside the Danube and pass through impressive villages such as Weissenkirchen and Durnstein. At the medieval town of Krems you will notice the Benedictine Abbey of Gottweig on its prominent hilltop across the river. Beyond Krems you suddenly leave the hills and their vineyards behind as you enter the plains. The river becomes much broader and slower moving. The cycling part of the holiday ends in Tulln from where you travel by train to Vienna. ~ 36 miles
