This cycling holiday takes you from Vienna, the capital of Austria to Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Basic Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Vienna
Day 2 Vienna to Petronell ~ 35 miles
Day 3 Petronell to Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi ~ 43 miles
Day 4 Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi to Gyor ~ 32 miles
Day 5 Gyor to Tata ~ 35 miles
Day 6 Tata to Esztergom ~ 34 miles
Day 7 Esztergom to Budapest ~ 42 miles
Day 8 Departure

The route broadly follows the River Danube, but also takes you into the surrounding countryside to give you a real sense of rural Hungary and its way of life. You will also pass through the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, which stands on the Danube. The route is mostly flat.

Grade: Easy

Getting there:
Fly to Vienna. Alternatively, Ryanair fly to Bratislava, Graz and Salzburg from where you can transfer to and from Vienna by train.
Day 1 Arrive Vienna

Day 2 Vienna to Petronell.
Following the Danube cycle path, you ride through the lovely meadows of the Donauauen National Park, passing the castles of Orth and Eckartsau to end the day near the Roman excavations at Petronell-Carnuntum. ~ 35 miles

Day 3 Petronell to Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi.
Today the route continues to follow the Danube cycle path and a brief excursion into Slovakia takes you to the capital, Bratislava. Beyond Bratislava, you soon enter Hungary and follow cycle paths and country lanes through typical Hungarian villages to your overnight stay. ~ 43 miles

Day 4 Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi to Gyor.
Along country lanes through the former marshland area of Little Alfold you will pass through charming villages to the provincial capital of Gyor with its attractive baroque centre. ~ 32 miles

Day 5 Gyor to Tata.
Leaving the rolling plains of the Danube, the countryside changes to one of rolling hills and woodland leading to the picturesque town of Tata located between two lakes. A detour along the route takes you to the Benedictine monastery of Pannonhalma. ~ 35 miles

Day 6 Tata to Esztergom.
A hillier day takes you through the densely wooded Gerecse hills, deep in the Hungarian countryside, to Esztergom with its imposing cathedral at the end of you ride. ~ 34 miles

Day 7 Esztergom to Budapest.
The route today leads you to Visegrod where you take the ferry to the island of Szentendre and from here by ferry to the artists' village of the same name, before continuing on to the Hungarian capital. Alternatively, you can continue by boat all the way from Szentendre to Budapest. ~ 42 miles

Day 8 Departure.
