Making use of many of the old pack trails over the mountain passes, you are not forced into scaling the summits each day. However, for those who wish to take in some of the mountain tops, there is ample time and opportunity.
Grade: The walking is moderate with a couple of longish days so you should be reasonably fit.
You will normally be staying in a town or village where there is at least one place to buy an evening meal. On the rare occasion that this is not possible, we will book you into an accommodation which provides an evening meal (this is not included in the holiday price). Lunches can usually be bought on route and we can advise you of the days when this is not possible. On these days you can book a packed lunch from your accommodation by letting them know the night before or we can book it for you. These usually cost about £5. Alternatively, most of the towns and villages in which you stay have shops where you can buy items to make up your own packed lunch.
When to Go:
April, May and June are when everything comes to life so it is very green, wild flowers are abundant and blossom abounds. July and August tend to be the warmest months, but it is rarely so warm as to be uncomfortable for walking or cycling. September tends to be one of the most pleasant times in the countryside and is quieter as most people with children have finished their holidays. By October the days are getting shorter and the weather is much more changeable.
Getting There:
By car: Route details can be provided on request. Should you wish to leave your car at the first accommodation please let us know in advance and we may be able to book this.
By Air: The most convenient airports are Manchester or Leeds-Bradford.
By Rail: Take a train to Foxfield station and then a short taxi ride to Broughton in Furness.
Return Journey: Train from Foxfield
There is a railway station at nearby Foxfield, but please note that on Sundays trains only go to Ulverston, which is 8 miles away.
Day 2 Broughton in Furness to Coniston.
The Lakeland Round walk has a gentle start across farmland, then the mountains gradually get closer as you approach Coniston. The last part of the walk follows the delightful lakeside path along Coniston Water. ~ 11 miles
Day 3 Coniston to Grasmere.
You are among the mountains now but it is still a fairly low level day. You will pass the prettily situated Tarn Hows, then it is up to Elterwater (lake and village), in the Langdale valley. A path giving fantastic views takes you over the ridge to Grasmere. ~ 10 miles
Day 4 Grasmere to Rosthwaite.
A fairly short day but you climb quite high up the Easedale valley to cross Greenup Edge before descending into the very scenic valley of Borrowdale. ~ 7 miles
Day 5 Rosthwaite to Braithwaite.
Again a fairly short day but today you will go over the peaks of High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells. Views over Derwentwater are delightful from this ridge as are the views into the Newlands Valley before descending to Braithwaite. ~ 8 miles
Day 6 Braithwaite to Buttermere.
Today the route takes you up Coledale, encircled by mountains. As you cross the pass the views change once more and grand vistas open up with Crummock Water below you, Loweswater to the right and Buttermere to the left. After descending to Crummock Water a delightful path up the tiny valley of Rannerdale ends the day.
~ 9 miles
Day 7 Buttermere to Boot.
This is perhaps the toughest day as you first walk round the lake before crossing the old pass of Scarth Gap to the head of Ennerdale. Next it is up and over Black Sail Pass to Wasdale Head before the final climb of the day to Burnmoor Tarn. The final descent leads you into the beautiful valley of Eskdale and your accommodation. ~12 miles
Day 8 Boot to Broughton in Furness.
The final day is spent in the remoter hills of the Lake District. Leaving Eskdale you cross over the ridge to the Duddon Valley then an old track leads you over the final climb before views open up to the sea to the south and the route returns you fitter to Broughton in Furness.~ 12 miles
