The town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber lies on the Romantic Road in Bavaria. It is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and with its fairytale atmosphere is a truly fascinating place to explore. The route from here to Regensburg takes you through the largest national park in Germany, the Altmuhltal. There are numerous historic small towns and villages amongst the wooded valleys and it is a good place for a diversity of wildlife. At Kelheim the valley of the River Altmuhl, which you have been following, flows into the Danube. The last day follows this river to the picturesque city of Regensburg, where once again there is much to explore.

Grade: Moderate

Getting there:
Fly to Frankfurt or Munich then train to Rothenburg.
Day 1 Arrive Rothenburg.

Day 2 Rothenburg to Herrieden.
Leaving the romantic route, or Romantische Strasse, with its fairytale town of Rothenberg behind, you enter the upper part of the Altmuhl valley to pedal through a tranquil landscape with sleepy villages. You pass the castle at Colmberg and the small town of Leutershausen before reaching Herrieden. ~ 32 miles

Day 3 Herrieden to Treuchtlingen.
Continuing down the valley of the River Altmuhl you come to the pretty lake of the Altmuhlsee. Gunzenhausen is a small town with baroque architecture which you pass before entering the Altmuhltal National Park en route to your destination of Treuchtlingen. ~ 31 miles

Day 4 Treuchtlingen to Eichstatt.
So far, your journey down the Altmuhltal has been along a relatively wide valley. Beyond Treuchtlingen this changes as the river is hemmed in by the steep hillsides of the Frankische Jura. It is a very impressive route that you follow as the river carves its way through to the historic town of Eichstatt. ~ 36 miles

Day 5 Eichstatt to Beilngries.
All day today is still spent inside the Altmuhltal National Park and your route continues to follow the valley through the typical Bavarian countryside past Kipfenberg and Kinding to the town of Beilngries, overlooked by the imposing Schloss Hirschberg. ~ 34 miles

Day 6 Beilngries to Kelheim.
Your route today continues to follow the valley down to Dietfurt, where you can visit the lock system on the new Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. Beyond here, you cycle through beautiful countryside, still in the national park, by way of Riedenburg to Kelheim, where the River Altmuhl flows into the Danube. ~ 30 miles

Day 7 Kelheim to Regensburg.
The final day's cycling is a short one, following the Danube Cycle Way to reach the historic city of Regensburg. This will allow you plenty of time to explore the old medieval centre with the impressive cathedral surrounded by a network of narrow streets. ~ 17 miles

Day 8 Departure.
